In each of seventeen chapters, the book introduces readers to major, history-changing discoveries that happened entirely by accident, from the 1709 discovery of Italy’s Herculaneum by workers digging a well to Johannesburg cavers coming across a trove of early hominin remains in 2013. The opening of each chapter describes the discovery, then backs up to place it into historical context, and finally moves forward to explain why each matters. A great mix of science and history for kids 8 and up. (Great for middle schoolers interested in archaeology!)
