Peter Catalanotto

Peter has presented his creative process, from inspiration to finished book, in more than 1600 schools in 40 states. He demonstrates student-friendly strategies for getting ideas and developing them. Peter uses humorous anecdotes from his life to demonstrate how the simplest events can become an interesting and imaginative story. He also sketches in each program, showing tips and techniques that children are eager to try. Peter tailors his presentation for different grade levels, preschool through 6th. Students leave his presentations inspired and empowered to write and draw.

Peter has presented at many conferences, colleges, and in-services, where he shows educators basic, child-friendly strategies to inspire even the most reluctant writers. He also gives tips to teachers to make them more confident as writers and writing instructors.

Peter has published 50 books for children, 20 of which he has written, including Ivan the Terrier, Matthew A. B. C., and Emily’s Art. His latest books, Monkey & Robot: Friends and Neighbors, and Monkey & Robot: Flights of Fancy, are early reader graphic novels of which School Library Journal wrote, ‘…perfect for introducing young readers to this genre.’ He has illustrated for some wonderful writers, including Cynthia Rylant, Mary Pope Osborne, Joanne Ryder, Megan McDonald, George Ella Lyon and Robert Burleigh.

In 2008, Peter was invited by First Lady, Laura Bush, to illustrate the White House holiday brochure and he currently teaches the first children’s book writing course offered by Columbia University and Pratt Institute.
